Manipulating
playful readymade objects is my main concern - Order and control is
something that often dominates my practice, changing and altering
means I can manoeuvre the materials to suggest a sense of belonging.
Therefore grids, lines, weaving often feature in my work. Repeating
of a certain gesture produce order and clarity in my practice. Juxtaposing
these bought objects into quirky ensembles and incorporating colour
and line to suggest a monumental presence.
In reference to order and monumentality
Fascism became important, in particular Adolf Hitler and his views
on art and architecture. His obsession with columns and pillars
captivated me, his use of architecture to dominate and intimidate
all who saw it. I wanted to comment on this, to manipulate these
columns in a playful sense, aesthetically with the use of ribbon
and skittles but also contextually referencing Hitler Youth and
the excessive control Hitler tried to in force on everyday German
life.
